Dr Bindeshwar Pathak’s visionary leadership in liberating manual scavengers in Alwar and Tonk, Rajasthan, laid the groundwork for their social integration and empowerment. Building on this legacy, Sulabh International is now transforming the lives of these women by training them to become advocates for menstrual health.
Through a comprehensive program, women are educated on the biological, social, and economic aspects of menstruation, helping them dispel myths and break taboos. Equipped with this knowledge, they are raising awareness in their communities and leading discussions to normalize conversations about menstrual health. This shift is vital in addressing the stigma surrounding menstruation, which often leads to exclusion and discrimination.
These women are also going to receive training to produce affordable sanitary napkins locally, addressing both accessibility, affordability and employment challenges. By setting up local production units, they will improve access to sanitary products while creating sustainable economic opportunities for themselves and their communities.
Sulabh International’s initiative is a significant step toward empowering women to take charge of their futures. From being former manual scavengers to becoming menstrual health advocates and entrepreneurs, these women are playing a crucial role in improving the health and dignity of their communities.
