Swachhata Trek at Kedarkantha

Sulabh International Social Service Organisation, in collaboration with the Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF), successfully organised the Kedarkantha Swachhata Trek under its Shikhar Se Sagar Tak initiative, combining adventure with environmental stewardship and community service in the Himalayan region.
The 11-day expedition, led by Shri Rawat and a team of nine Swachhata warriors, including Sabita Mahato from Sulabh, commenced from Sankri, the base camp for the Kedarkantha Trek, and traversed the scenic trails of the Govind Wildlife Sanctuary at an altitude of 12,500 feet (3,810 metres). The expedition followed the route Dehradun – Sankri – Juda Ka Talab – Kedarkantha Base – Summit – Hargaon – Sankri – Dehradun, concluding after successfully accomplishing its mission.
Recognising the growing popularity of Kedarkantha among trekkers, the initiative focused on promoting responsible trekking and environmental conservation. Throughout the expedition, the team conducted cleanliness drives along the trekking route, encouraging trekkers, tourists, and local communities to adopt sustainable practices and protect the fragile Himalayan ecosystem. To support long-term cleanliness, the team also installed garbage bins at multiple locations along the trekking route, encouraging the proper disposal of waste and helping maintain the pristine mountain environment. The collected waste was handed over to the local administration for scientific disposal, helping preserve the natural environment before the onset of the monsoon.
As part of its community outreach, the team also organised a free medical camp at Kot Village after completing the cleanliness drive. With the support of a local MBBS doctor, basic health check-ups and medical consultations were provided to approximately 100–120 local residents. To further promote women’s health and dignity, sanitary pads were distributed to adolescent girls and women, accompanied by awareness sessions on menstrual hygiene.
The expedition reflected Sulabh International’s integrated approach to environmental conservation, public health, sanitation, and behavioural change. By combining mountain conservation with healthcare and menstrual hygiene awareness, the initiative reinforced the importance of community participation in protecting both people and nature.
The Kedarkantha Swachhata Trek concluded with the team’s safe return to Dehradun, followed by a flag-in ceremony organised at the Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF), New Delhi, marking the successful completion of another impactful expedition under Sulabh International’s Shikhar Se Sagar Tak initiative.
