About the Memorial

Honouring a Pioneer of Sanitation and Social Reform

Dr Bindeshwar Pathak Memorial

The Dr Bindeshwar Pathak Memorial, located at Sulabh Gram, New Delhi, honours the life and legacy of Dr Bindeshwar Pathak, founder of Sulabh International and a globally recognised sociologist and social reformer. Through his pioneering work in sanitation and social transformation, Dr Pathak helped improve the lives of millions by promoting safe sanitation practices, environmental sustainability, and human dignity.

Dr Pathak’s innovative contributions — including the development and promotion of the Sulabh twin-pit pour-flush toilet system, bio-digesters, and sanitation-linked biogas technologies — played a crucial role in addressing sanitation challenges in India while restoring dignity to communities historically engaged in manual scavenging.

The Space

A Space for Learning and Reflection

Housed in Dr Pathak’s former personal office, the Memorial has been envisioned as a space for learning, reflection, and inspiration. It chronicles the journey of a man who dedicated his life to eradicating manual scavenging, promoting sanitation as a human right, and placing dignity at the centre of development.

Through thoughtfully curated exhibits and archival materials, the memorial offers visitors insight into Dr Pathak’s ideas, work, and the broader impact of the Sulabh sanitation movement in India and around the world.
