Sulabh International Social Service Organization, under its national environmental initiative Project “Shikhar Se Sagar Tak”, organized a meaningful Swachhta Awareness and Beach Cleaning Drive at Worli Beach, Mumbai. Guided by the theme “Clean Coast – Clean India – Climate Responsible Future”, the programme reflected a strong commitment towards promoting sanitation, environmental sustainability, and climate-conscious behaviour.
The event was graced by Mrs Padmaja A Chemburkar, Chairperson (G-South Ward), MCGM, as the Chief Guest. It witnessed enthusiastic participation from NCC Cadets representing three battalions, Naval personnel, ex-servicemen, senior citizens, students, local volunteers, and members of the print media. The MCGM Solid Waste Management team extended full operational support, including waste collection and transportation, ensuring effective execution of the programme.
A major highlight of the initiative was the formal handover of a renovated public toilet complex by Sulabh International to the Municipal Corporation for public use. The upgraded facility aims to provide improved sanitation services and maintain hygiene standards for the large number of visitors to Worli Beach, reinforcing the importance of infrastructure in sustaining cleanliness and long-term environmental outcomes.
The programme commenced with a Swachhta pledge, followed by a coordinated beach cleaning drive across key stretches of the coastline. Volunteers actively collected plastic waste and other debris, which was carefully segregated and handed over for proper disposal in coordination with municipal authorities. Alongside the cleaning activity, participants engaged with the public to spread awareness about responsible waste disposal, reduction of plastic usage, and the urgent need for environmental protection and climate action.
Swachhta posters, banners, and placards carrying messages such as “Clean Beach Clean Future” and “My Waste My Responsibility” were displayed prominently, encouraging behavioural change and civic responsibility among visitors. As part of the initiative, a symbolic plantation activity was also carried out near the beach to promote green practices and ecological consciousness.
The initiative focused on promoting clean coastal ecosystems, reducing plastic pollution, encouraging climate responsibility, and strengthening community-driven environmental action. Speaking on the occasion, the organizers emphasized that Swachhta is not only about cleaning public spaces but also about creating sustainable systems and long-term awareness that contribute to public health, environmental sustainability, and overall well-being.
The Chief Guest appreciated the efforts of Sulabh International and expressed interest in expanding such initiatives further in collaboration with MCGM and the local fishermen community, highlighting the importance of sustained and inclusive coastal conservation efforts.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks acknowledging the contributions of all participants and supporting agencies. Refreshments were provided to volunteers in appreciation of their dedication to the social cause. Sulabh International reiterated its commitment to continue organizing such initiatives across the country, promoting cleanliness, sanitation, and environmental responsibility.
