For Shri Balmiki Prasad Singh

The “Man of Letters Award” was constituted annually to a scholar of repute who has made an outstanding contribution to the world of letters. The Award specially recognises the contribution of persons, belonging to different disciplines – not necessarily academics – who have been able to excel in their fields.

Mr Balmiki Prasad Singh, IAS (1964) distinguished civil servant (former culture secretary, health secretary and home secretary) and scholar was selected for the first “Man of Letters Award” for his groundbreaking writings which bring out some of the complex features of the Indian culture.

His Holiness The Dalai Lama feilcitated the “Man of the Letters” Award to Mr Balmiki Prasad Singh. His Holiness described Mr Singh as “a person who has attempted to translate the lessons of this culture into his life”.

The award which carried Rs 5 Lakh in cash, a golden plaque , a gold pendant and a citation was presented by His Holiness Dalai Lama in a function held on June 11, 2003

The jury comprises of Mr justice Yadunath Sharan Singh, former Judge of the Patna High Court, Mr. Justice S. Shamshul Hasan, former judge of the Patna High Court and Dr. Zeyauddin Ahmed, Vice Chancellor of the Dr. Ambedkar University, Bihar.
