A proposal is on the drawing board to establish Dr Bindeshwar Pathak Chair in the prestigious Banaras Hindu University(BHU) in recognition of his historic contribution in environmental sanitation and social reforms in contemporary India. The Dean of Social Sciences of the University Dr Manjeet Chaturvedi said here today in a press conference that a PG course for Action Sociology would be introduced under “Dr Bindeshwar Pathak Chair” to provide education towards Sanitation,Social reforms and other aspects of society. Dr Pathak, who is renowned the world over, is the founder of Sulabh Social and Sanitation Movement and his epic struggle for restoring human rights to the scavenging Dalits and his invention of life-altering sanitation technologies makes him one of the greatest living Indians. Besides championing social reform, Dr Pathak transformed the sanitation scenario in India by developing a self-sustaining model of public sanitation and his invention of Sulabh compost toilet technology has been internationally recognised as one of the best global practices for safe disposal of human waste. In this background, considering Dr Pathak’s global recognition as a sanitation crusader, a social transformer and an inspirational leader who has changed the life of millions of people, it would be most appropriate in the centenary year of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and Sulabh International Social Service Organisation to introduce an action-oriented study and research, Dr Chaturvedi added. The objectives and functions of Dr Bindeshwar Pathak Chair, Faculty of Social Sciences, Banaras Hindu University is to empirically study and critically analyse the wide range of social, educational and sanitation engagements and achievements of Sulabh movement. In perspective of the main objective, the Chair will serve the as a course of study in Action Sociology for Post-Graduate teaching .Dr. Pathak who was present on the press conference appreciated this proposal floated by Sulabh and accepted by university dean. He said that the trainees under the purview of the Chair, students of M.A. programme shall be provided internship in various organs of Sulabh International and an exchange programme between the BHU and Sulabh International for students, teachers and trainers will be started.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) shall be signed between Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, and Sulabh International Social Service Organisation, soon. UNI MB JW SB 1824
